About this course
Partial Discharge is the earliest warning that insulation is starting to fail in MV and HV assets. Miss it, and it moves quietly toward breakdown, equipment damage, safety incidents, and unplanned outages.
Most engineers know PD matters. What's missing is a structured way to learn how it actually works — how it starts, how it's detected, and how test results turn into maintenance decisions. That knowledge lives inside a few specialist teams, not in a course you can follow end to end.
This Level 1 and Level 2 pathway is that structured route: from how PD forms, through online and offline testing and sensor technologies, to asset-specific diagnostics on switchgear, transformers, cables, and rotating machines — with real case studies throughout. Both levels include an online exam and CPD points on completion, delivered by working PD engineers from Monitra (formerly HVPD).
Industry Collaborators

Monitra
Monitra is a specialist MV/HV asset monitoring company focused on improving the safety, reliability, and uptime of high-voltage electrical networks. Formerly known as HVPD, Monitra develops Partial Discharge testing and monitoring solutions for assets such as cables, switchgear, transformers, generators, and motors.
Skills you'll learn
PD Fundamentals
Understand what Partial Discharge is, why it starts in and around insulation, and why it's an early indicator of failure.
PD Location in Real Assets
Identify where PD occurs across switchgear, transformers, MV/HV cables, joints, terminations, and rotating machines.
Online vs Offline Testing
Select the right method for the situation and see how each supports condition-based maintenance.
Sensors & Measurement
Understand how HFCT, TEV, acoustic, UHF, and coupling-capacitor methods detect different PD signals.
Reading PD Data
Interpret PD magnitude, pulse count, PRPD patterns, and trends to judge asset condition and risk.
Field Decision-Making
Apply PD results to maintenance planning, fault prevention, asset-life extension, and safer HV operation.

CPD Accredited by The CPD Standards Office
This pathway is formally accredited by The CPD Standards Office (CPD Provider No. 21330), so the points you earn are independently recognised — not self-issued. Complete Level 1 to earn 3.5 CPD points and Level 2 for a further 5 CPD points, awarded on passing each level’s online examination. Many engineering bodies and employers use CPD points to evidence ongoing professional development, which makes them useful at appraisals, for professional-body membership, and as clear proof that your MV/HV skills are current.

Instructor
Malcolm Seltzer-Grant
Malcolm Seltzer-Grant received a BEng (Hons) degree in electrical and electronic engineering from The University of Manchester in 2005. He then joined HVPD (now Monitra) whilst studying for a PhD degree at The University of Manchester School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering which was awarded in 2010 for research into measurement techniques and applications of on-line partial discharge detection in power cables. At Monitra Malcolm has held several roles in test services and product development, since 2016 he has been in his present role as Technical Director. He has worked extensively in the field performing PD measurements and other high voltage tests on a range of high voltage assets including power cables, switchgear, transformers and rotating machines. He has led several development projects with internal and external funding that have formed the foundation of Monitra’s technology. He has co-authored several journal papers and presented conference papers at CIGRE, IEEE IAS and IEEE DEIS events sharing knowledge and experiences in the PD field.

FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
Confused about the process?
Our FAQ section provides clarity to help you move forward.
Do I need to complete Level 1 before Level 2?
We recommend it. Level 1 builds the fundamentals — how PD forms, detection theory, online vs offline testing — that Level 2's asset-specific diagnostics assume. If you already work with PD testing, you can move faster through Level 1, but it sets the foundation Level 2 builds on.
Can I enroll my whole team? Is there a corporate discount?
Yes. We offer team enrollment for groups of 5 or more — reach out to info@theelectricalguyacademy.com and we'll share the details.
Can I add my GST details when purchasing?
Yes. Just follow this quick guide: https://www.theelectricalguyacademy.com/help-center/add-gst-details-while-purchasing
What are CPD points?
CPD (Continuing Professional Development) points recognise the learning hours you invest in building your skills. Many engineering bodies and employers use them to track ongoing professional growth
Is this practical or just theory?
Practical. Every module is tied to real assets — switchgear, transformers, cables, rotating machines — with real-world case studies throughout, taught by working PD engineers.
Can I access the content anytime & anywhere?
Yes, you can access the content anytime & anywhere on laptop or mobile. Internet connection is required.
Is it live or recorded course?
This is a recorded course. You can access it as many times as you want.
Can I cancel my course purchase if I don’t like it? Will I get a refund?
Yes! You can cancel your course within 7 days of purchase if you don’t like it. We don’t want your money if you are unhappy with the course. Do check out our Return Policy for more details.
